Engineering ethics is not merely a set of rules. It forms the foundation of sound decision-making across all areas of engineering practice, from technical design to organizational leadership. Ethical considerations are inherent in every decision, whether it involves complex calculations, project implementation, or personnel management. In an era where both accurate information and misinformation circulate at unprecedented speeds, engineers encounter evolving ethical challenges that reach beyond the boundaries of their workplaces and into the broader society.

All engineering disciplines adhere to established codes of ethics, commonly based on the model developed by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations. However, no code can fully encompass the wide range of ethical and moral complexities professionals may face. Individual values, experiences, and perceptions play a critical role in how engineers interpret data, assess situations, and make judgments.

Recognizing and understanding these underlying influences is essential to responsible and effective engineering practice. This session will examine the development of individual perceptions, present structured approaches to ethical analysis, and engage participants through interactive examples to enhance ethical decision-making skills.

Solar-powered reactor converts CO₂ and water into jet fuel

A pilot-scale solar fuel reactor outside Madrid can produce jet fuel from two simple ingredients: carbon dioxide and water (Joule 2022, DOI: 10.1016/j.joule.2022.06.012). Kerosene made with this process, which is powered by heat from a solar concentrator, could serve as a drop-in replacement for fossil fuels.

Abstract - In recent years, a number of strategies have been put forward to both reduce the emission of CO₂ into the environment and utilize what has traditionally been considered “waste” CO₂ for the development of new materials, chemical feedstocks, and fuels. To this end, electrochemical reduction of aqueous CO₂ to organics appears attractive. However, this chemistry has been severally limited by a lack of efficient electrocatalysts. This deficiency has meant that one often cannot produce the compounds of interest. In cases where a path to the target compound was available, the lack of appropriate catalysts meant that excessive electrode potentials needed to be employed and that water could not be employed as the electrolyte. These two parameters dramatically impact the cost of electrochemical CO₂ conversion.

To date, the only material reported to be an efficient electrode for CO₂ reduction is copper metal. This presentation will focus on work in our labs at Princeton University that has now revealed that binary intermetallic compounds composed of a first row transition metal and a post transition metal such as aluminum or gallium provide a new source of heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the reduction of CO₂ to form a variety of C1 and C2+ organic products.

Biography - Andrew Bocarsly received his BS degree jointly in chemistry and physics from UCLA in 1976, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from M.I.T. in 1980. He has been a member of the Princeton University, Chemistry Department faculty for thirty-nine years and holds affiliations with Princeton’s Materials Institute, Princeton’s Environmental Institute and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. Professor Bocarsly has published over 225 papers and co-authored over a dozen patents. Research in his laboratory is focused on electrochemistry and photoelectrochemistry for the conversion of carbon dioxide to fuels and feedstocks; new materials for electrochemistry and molecular multielectron photoinduced charge transfer processes.

Professor Bocarsly serves as a consultant to various alternate energy companies. He co-founded Liquid Light Inc., a company formed to commercialize the formation of organic commodity chemicals from CO₂. Professor Bocarsly has received an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, the Sigma Xi (Princeton Section) Science Educator Award, and the American Chemical Society-Exxon Solid State Chemistry award. He has served on the Advisory Board for the Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, has edited a volume for Structure and Bonding in the area of fuel cells and batteries, and served as the electrochemistry editor for Methods in Materials Research. He currently sits on the editorial advisory board of Journal of CO₂ Utilization, and the international advisory board of the International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization. He is a fellow of the American Scientific Affilation.

Abstract - What is qPCR (quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction), and how does it work? What is the chemistry behind this powerful technique? This presentation will discuss the chemistry and biochemistry that makes it work. This seminar reviews associated applications when working with DNA, RNA, and protein analysis. DNA applications include mutation detection, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and high resolution melt. RNA applications reviewed are gene expression and small RNA. The final section of the talk examines protein expression and digital PCR.

Biography - Geoff Jackson is a Regional Field Application Scientist for Thermo Fisher Scientific with over 30 years of experience in molecular biology and pathogen detection.

Prior to this role, Geoff was a lead biologist and program manager at Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for almost 10 years. He is fluent in many scientific and molecular biology techniques that include but are not limited to basic science benchwork; pathogen detection assay development; bioterrorism response and prevention; program management; and emergency management.

“Off Paradigm Drug Discovery and the AMR / COVID-19 Era”

Abstract- For many years it had been recognized that the world was facing a problem in the lack of new anti-infective drugs to tackle the increasing prevalence of microbial resistance to existing drugs. The global pharmaceutical industry had largely ignored the problem for understandable commercial reasons. The standard industry drug-discovery paradigm of single drug, single target leading to predefined beneficial effect also imposes limitations on the discovery of resilient antimicrobial drugs because resistance can easily arise from mutations in the target (together with other mechanisms). Such target driven drug discovery is powerful but in fields such as anti-infective drugs, other approaches that I call ‘off-paradigm’ become highly relevant if they lead to resilient new drugs. This was the approach we took at Strathclyde using minor groove binders for DNA (S-MGBs) and we have been able to discover a wide range of anti-infective compounds for bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases, the most advanced of which has successfully completed a Phase 2a clinical trial.

Then along came COVID-19 and changed the world. Interestingly and perhaps surprisingly some of our S-MGBs had shown high activity against hepatitis C virus in vitro. This raised the obvious question of whether S-MGBs would be active against COVID-19, a question that is being addressed right now. Further, the acute effects of COVID-19 infection including the so-called cytokine charge and serious lung disorders pointed to the importance of another of our off-paradigm drug discovery projects in the field of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory compounds. In this second project, from the starting point of a protein secreted by a parasitic nematode worm we discovered a range of compounds, known as SMAs, that have been shown to be highly effective in a wide range of animal models of disease, including some relevant to treating COVID-19 patients. This talk will discuss the design, biological activity, and mechanism of action (as much as is known) of S-MGBs and SMAs and speculate about their potential contribution to treatments for COVID-19 infections and future biosecurity.

Biography - Colin Suckling is a graduate of the University of Liverpool (BSc 1967, PhD 1970, DSc 1989) and has spent most of the rest of his academic career at the University of Strathclyde where he was Freeland Professor of Chemistry from 1989 to 2012. During the 1990s until 2002, was Dean of the Faculty of Science, Deputy Principal, and Vice Principal of the University. Currently he is a Research Professor of Chemistry.

Research interests focus on the synthesis and properties of heterocyclic compounds designed as molecular probes for biological systems and as drugs for treating infectious and inflammatory diseases. The most advanced compound, a DNA Minor Groove Binder (MGB), has successfully completed a phase 2a clinical trial for the treatment of Clostridium difficile infections (May 2020). Other compounds in the Strathclyde collection of MGBs are nearing candidate selection status as treatments for African Animal Trypanosomiasis and also as antifungal compounds. A further advanced project in medicinal chemistry entering the commercial phase concerns immunomodulatory compounds based upon the structures of protein secretions of parasitic worms. The small molecule analogues of the parasite protein show great promise as treatments for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and lupus.

Colin has published over 250 papers and books. He was the Adrien Albert Lecturer of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2009-10), Chairman of the 2011 International Congress of Heterocyclic Chemistry held in Glasgow, recipient of the Nexxus Lifetime Achievement Award (2011), and elected an Honorary Life Fellow of the Indian Society of Chemists and Biologists (2011). Colin is a Fellow of many learned societies and Royal Colleges including the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He was a B.D Tilak Fellow of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, in 2019.

“Chemistry in Your Cup – Chemical Characteristics of Cold Brew Coffee”

Abstract: Both small and large commercial coffee brewers have recently begun offering cold-brew coffee drinks to customers with claims that these cold-water extracts contain fewer bitter acids, due to brewing conditions, while still retaining the flavor profile. Dunkin Donuts’ website suggests that the cold-water and long brewing times allow the coffee to reach “... its purest form.” With very little research existent on the chemistry of cold- brew coffee, consumers are left to the marketing strategies of Starbucks and other companies regarding the contents of cold-brew coffee. Our goal is to provide some scientific information about this new coffee trend. The present research employs a simple French press style set-up to brew both cold brew and hot brew coffee. We varied the brewing time, origin of beans, and degree of roast to understand how these parameters affect the acidity, antioxidant activity, as well as the concentration of caffeine of the coffee brew.

Biography: Dr. Niny Rao is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and the Director of Chemistry and Biochemistry Program at Thomas Jefferson University, College of Life Sciences. She received her bachelor degree in chemical engineering from the Cooper Union and went on to pursuit a PhD in physical chemistry at Florida State University. A computational chemist by training, her past research interests spanned from small inorganic ion clusters to protein-lipid bilayer complex. As an enthusiast of artisanal food and beverages, Dr. Rao has expanded her research into the field of food science, such as chemistry of cold brew coffee.

“Communicating about Science, Risk, and Health in an Era of Virally Disseminated Nonsense”

Abstract: Most of our lifelong learning about science occurs informally, outside of a classroom, and often on the Internet. In this presentation, I will use examples drawn from food, health, and the environment to talk about virally disseminated misinformation, how to communicate with others about science, and why presenting scientific facts alone typically isn’t enough to persuade people to change their minds or their behaviors.

Biography: Dr. William K. Hallman is a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Human Ecology at Rutgers University and is a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. An experimental psychologist with expertise in science and risk communication, he has written extensively about numerous issues concerning health, food, technology, and the environment. These include studies of public perception, communication, and behavior change strategies involving infectious and non-communicable diseases, unexplained symptom syndromes, food safety and food insecurity, preventive health behaviors, environmental contaminants, climate adaptation and mitigation, responses to natural and technological disasters, and new food technologies including genetic modification, gene editing, nanotechnology, animal cloning, and the development of cell-based meats and seafood.

Dr. Hallman has served as the Director of the Rutgers Food Policy Institute and as Chair of the FDA’s Risk Communication Advisory Committee. He currently serves as a member of several committees of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, including the Advisory Committee for the Academies’ Climate Communications Initiative and the Standing Committee on Advancing Science Communication Research and Practice. He authored the Climate Communications Initiative Strategic Plan, as well as the National Academies’ consensus report: Communicating Science Effectively, A Research Agenda, which has been downloaded more than 32,000 times. He also coauthored the Risk Communication Applied to Food Safety Handbook, published jointly by the FAO and WHO.

Abstract

I am delighted to share with you the use of several analytical tools in my mass spectrometry toolbox to characterize a variety of consumer products. Some of the products discussed are used by the general population spanning from high school students to senior citizens.

Consumers are faced with a daunting task trying to decipher fact from fiction when purchasing products to improve health and longevity. To assist consumers, we have been using several different types of mass spectrometers that include GC-TOF-MS, linear ion traps, Q-TOF, IMS-Q-TOF, and LDI-TOF-TOF to characterize all types of samples from electronic cigarette liquids to sushi. Our philosophy for analyses centers around minimal or no-sample preparation and taking an untargeted approach in our workflows. This presentation will then focus on basic mass spectrometry that is used to determine purity, molecular structure, concentrations, and sources of a variety of consumer products that the audience uses daily. Also presented will be a forensic approach to solving an actual adulterated dietary supplement product sold as a health fraud product targeted towards senior citizens.

Biography

Professor Gene S. Hall received his BS degree in both Chemistry and Mathematics in 1973 from Tusculum College and his PhD in radiochemistry from the Virginia Polytechnical Institute (Virginia Tech) in 1978. He then went on to the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers University in 1979 as an assistant professor of analytical chemistry to fulfill his life-long dream of

being a chemistry professor. He is currently full professor where his focus is on using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry to characterize various consumer products such as dietary supplements, natural foods, artist paintings, and electronic cigarettes.

Abstract: Terpenes are fundamental building blocks for fragrance ingredients. Presented will be some insight into IFF as a leader in the fragrance industry, what it’s like to work as a synthetic chemist in Fragrance Ingredient R&D, and some classic chemistry that is conducted on a multi-ton scale to supply the consumer demand for aroma chemicals. Examples of odor categories will be demonstrated on blotters.

Incorporation of fragrances into delivery systems designed for specific applications and shelf-life requirements will be discussed. Examples will be demonstrated.

Biographies: Lisa Veliath is currently a Senior Research Investigator for Fragrance Ingredient Synthesis at IFF. She received her BS in Chemistry/Nutrition from Fordham University and her PhD in Organic Chemistry from Rutgers University under Dr. Roger Jones. Her professional career has spanned several areas of industry, including pharmaceuticals (Merck), agrochemical analytical research (Eurofins) and consumer products (Kraftfoods). She has been at IFF for 7 years.

Ronald Gabbard is the Director for Delivery Systems at IFF. His team focuses on the encapsulation and controlled release of flavors and fragrances in a wide range of applications. Dr. Gabbard received his BS, MS, and PhD, all in chemical engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology where he is also an accessional adjunct faculty member and is also on the Chemical and Material Engineering Department’s Industrial Advisory Board.

Takashi Sasaki is a Senior Research Investigator for Delivery Systems at IFF. His research focuses on fragrance encapsulation technologies in various consumer product application. He received his BS with University Honors in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University and his PhD from Rice University in Organic Chemistry and Material Science under Professor James M. Tour. Before joining IFF, Takashi completed his post-doctoral fellowship at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands under Professor Ben Feringa.

"Pharma Drug Discovery & Development: Insights from a Career in Both"

Abstract
The process to discover, develop and launch a single new drug typically requires large teams working in multiple related but very different fields over a period of many years. Drawing extensively from the presenter’s own diverse experiences this talk will review the overall drug discovery and development process, indicating where and how it has and continues to evolve and particularly highlight the types of decisions that are made along the way and how they can influence the options at and outcomes of the later steps.

Biography
Les McQuire received his BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Dundee University, his home town in Scotland, and then moved to the University of Texas at Austin to conduct post-doctoral research in natural product synthesis. Following this, he joined Ciba Pharmaceuticals, now Novartis, in Summit NJ in the Medicinal Chemistry Research Department. Les eventually moved to the Novartis location in Cambridge, MA to help build the research organization there. At various times he has focused on Arthritis, Inflammation, Immunology or Cardiovascular programs, across all stages of the discovery process.
After 18 years in Research Les moved into Program Management in the Novartis Oncology Development and moved back to NJ. For almost all of the last 9 years Les has worked on novel treatments for breast cancer including Kisqali and the recently launched Piqray. As part of the core team overseeing Novartis’s breast cancer franchise Les was involved in all aspects of the Development process from clinical Proof of Concept in patients, through the design and implementation of clinical trial programs, compound manufacture, data analysis, submission and Health Authority approval and ultimately global launch. Les recently moved between areas in oncology and now serves as Global Program Executive Director for a portion of Novartis’s large Hematology franchise.
Les is actively involved in scientific societies serving as councilor for the North Jersey ACS Section, in various other local and national ACS roles and as a member of the Executive Committee and a Past-President of the US Section of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC.)

Bart Devolder, Conservator, Princeton University Art Museum will speak on "Painting Conservation; more than cleaning pictures"

Abstract: Bart Devolder will discuss the diverse tasks and competencies that fall under the job description of Painting Conservator. In this lecture, he will also explain some of his past conservation projects. Bart will also present some of the initial planning and ideas for the new Conservation Lab and Department of the Princeton University Art Museum, which is part of the new expanded museum building project slated for completion in 2023.

Biography: Bart J.C. Devolder received his M.A. in painting conservation from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, Belgium, in 2002. He held internships at the Akademia Sztuk Pieknych, Krakow, Poland, the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA), Brussels, and the Musée du Louvre, Paris. Bart also received a fellowship from the Straus Center for Conservation at the Harvard University Art Museums (2003–4) and was the Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Painting Conservation at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (2004–7).

Bart has worked for the Kimbell Art Museum and Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, first as assistant conservator of paintings (2007–10) and later as associate conservator of paintings (2010–12). Before joining the Princeton University Art Museum as conservator of collections in the summer of 2018, he was the on-site coordinator and painting conservator for the restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck (2012–18).

Reservations: The meeting will be held in Frick Laboratory, Princeton University. The social mixer will begin at 5:30 pm in the CaFe area of Taylor Commons. The lecture will be held in the Auditorium (B02) at 6:30 pm followed by dinner in Taylor Commons (CaFe area). Dr. Meanwell has a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Wayne State University. He joined Bristol-Myers Squibb in 1982 and has led the antiviral chemistry group since 1992. They have pioneered several mechanistically novel antiviral approaches including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus fusion inhibitors, HIV-1 attachment inhibitors and HCV NS5A inhibitors. They have also completed Phase 3 clinical trials of a combination of the HCV NS5A inhibitor daclatasvir and the HCV NS3 inhibitor asunaprevir.

Clarissa Forneris - "In Vitro Reconstitution of Native P450s Activities Enables Total Chemo-Enzymatic Syntheses of Vancomycin Aglycone Variants”

Abstract: Glycopeptide antibiotics (GPAs) are indispensible for the treatment of life-threatening infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, especially methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The founding member of this antibiotic class, vancomycin, has been in clinical use since 1948 and, to this date, it is known as the drug of last resort. As inevitable resistance to current antibiotics spreads among pathogenic bacteria, it will be necessary to have a constant supply of new treatments to replace them. Synthetic derivatization of known natural products is the most successful way to create more potent antibiotics, but this approach has been restricted within the GPAs, due to their size and chemical complexity. Three post-translational modifications (PTMs) to the GPA core peptide provide functional shape and rigidity to the molecule. In vancomycin, two bisaryl ether crosslinks and a biaryl carbon-carbon bond are installed by the cytochrome P450 enzymes OxyB, OxyA and OxyC, in this order. It has been hypothesized that if the enzymatic activity of these enzymes could be reconstituted in vitro, a route to the facile synthesis of vancomycin and analogs would be opened. Our work toward achieving this goal will be described.

Biography: Clarissa is a 5th year graduate student in the group of Prof. Seyedsayamdost at Princeton University. She is a native of Brazil and moved to Cambridge, MA to carry out her undergraduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she received a B.S. in Chemistry in 2013. While at MIT, she worked with Prof. Danheiser on synthetic applications of benzannulation reactions. During her graduate studies, she has developed a chemo-enzymatic strategy to synthesize vancomycin, the antibiotic of last resort, and its analogs.

Kevin Speina - "Towards Commodity Scale Production of Ketones Using a Resilient Fungal Heme Protein"

Abstract: The non-reactive nature of aliphatic C-H bonds makes catalytic oxyfunctionalization, under ambient conditions profoundly difficult. Overcoming this challenge has the potential of transforming low cost, abundant hydrocarbons (i.e. methane, cyclooctane) into low cost precursor molecules capable of derivatization; an industrially advantageous enterprise. Fortunately, nature evolved enzymatic catalysts able to perform oxygenation onto relatively inert C-H bonds. Cytochrome P450s (P450) are a class of monooxygenases that incorporate molecular oxygen onto aliphatic C-H bonds with remarkable regio and stereoselectivity. Within the P450 active site lies an iron protoporphyrin IX with a cysteinate axial ligand. Unfortunately, P450 enzymes require a prohibitively expensive cofactor NAD(P)H and reductases to perform C-H activation chemistry. A class of enzymes known as fungal aromatic peroxygenases (APOs) circumvents this limitation by using H202 as a co-substrate to perform C-H functionalization reactions. APO enzymes are stable, extracellular, glycosylated proteins that have no sequence homology to P450 analogs, yet have enhanced reactivity to P450 enzymes.. Our work with a recently identified APO from Marasmius rotula [MroAPO] will be described.

Biography: Kevin Speina is a graduate student in the at Princeton University, currently pursuing his PhD in bioinorganic chemistry. He graduated from Manhattan College with a BS in Chemistry and minors in philosophy, religion, and mathematics. His interest in green chemistry and entrepreneurship have kindled a passion for pursuing research and development; particularly focused on bringing products from lab bench to market. He speaks Portuguese, Spanish, Polish and English and is now studying Chinese in order to negotiate with fellow entrepreneurs and begin in investing in the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative.

Reservations: The meeting will be held in Frick Laboratory, Princeton University. The mixer will begin at 5:30 pm in the Taylor Commons. The lecture will be held in the Auditorium at 6:30 pm followed by dinner in CaFe area of Taylor Commons. Trenton ACS members and friends, the time is here for an event which will give you a chance to express your creativity, network with your peers, share and enhance your knowledge of Chemical Safety, and win great $$ prizes!

The window for submission for Safety Video proposals will be open from September 15^th to October 15^th, 2018. Once a team or individual submits a proposal, they will have the opportunity to interact with chemical safety experts from the ACS, create a great video, and participate in a fun awards ceremony at which outstanding videos will be recognized in multiple categories including "best picture."

Becht advisors have provided a wide array of experience and background to our clients including serving as technical experts in a legal setting on many financially significant cases.

In one example, our team was hired to develop economics impact of a broken five-year term agreement for our client to recover a wide range of petroleum oils and slop for an international oil company. Our client had provided staff and equipment on site but their client then decided to back out of the contract and did not pay any of the expenses accrued to the date of notice. Considerable legal effort was exercised to work out a settlement but the buyer of their services refused.

Our client, who found us by Internet search, was impressed by our many years of relevant experience in the petroleum refining business, and hired us for the project.

We examined the petroleum processing and pipeline facilities of their intended client in great detail. This included three trips to London for preparation and the final trip was for our day in court.

The refineries were examined for crude throughput on an annual basis including evaluation of the capacity of each of the downstream processing units. Our study revealed that there was considerable product loss or that a percentage of the crude oil was not making it to the refineries. The computed loss of crude and/or oil products was unbelievably large.

In addition, the method for handling slop oil and catchment from refinery oil sewer systems routed to API separators was also reviewed. At this location, oil was stored for periods of time in open pits, leading to large losses due to evaporation in the hot sun. Our thermodynamics expert modeled the pits with consideration of sun strength and duration, wind velocity and other factors. He provided a measure of loss of oil in just a 24 hour period that was astounding.

In addition we evaluated practice of the company’s pipeline with respect to oil produced when pigging the lines. Based on miles of pipeline and conventional rate of pigging and amount of slop produced, our pipeline expert provided an estimate of oil loss due to the practices used at their location. This too was significant.

I presented our results to a tribunal of judges in the Swiss International Arbitration court in London. Our data were exhibited using video connections with our experts who remained in the USA but were assisted by me serving as an expert witness, coordinating the team effort in front of the three Swiss judges.

Our client is extremely satisfied with our technical work and would hire us again for any and all of their future oil-related projects that require Becht Engineering skills.

God was highly concerned with chemical consultants. Their status in societies is not as high as it should be, they have major difficulties finding customers, they are considered by many as those who promote non-safe environmental practices, etc. Perhaps chemical consultants are an endangered species. After a short discussion with himself God decided to visit the Earth and act.

He was hired by a huge chemical company to address major problems at one of the processes in the Texas facility. The yield of the final product was only 38% instead of expected 72%. Moreover, the product formed in the lab was white and crystalline. The plant product should be almost pure based on the analytical data but was a gray, ugly oil.

The issue was not easy to solve but God had no problems. He proposed to increase the pH at stage II (during the second step) from 7.6 to 7.8.

-It will solve all your problems. I promise - he said.

-But why? - they asked.

-I cannot tell you. Just try – was his response.

They did not have much to loose so they did. It turned out that his solution worked like a dream. The yield of the final product of the process was above 95%, it was crystalline and the crystals where beautifully white. They paid the consultant’s fee and he went off to other consulting jobs.

A few days later one of the company executives asked the plant manager:

-How did the new consultant do?

-Well, we were not impressed at all. He didn’t even bother to ask what the melting point of our final product was.

A. Position Scope

The Client and Market Manager’s prime responsibilities are: 1) broker contracts between CECON DIVISION

potential science and engineering clients and the independent consultants in CECON DIVISION’s network in

support of Becht Engineering Contract section, 2) implement and manage active consulting projects, 3) take

technical and market ownership of defined applications and market sectors, and 4) provide professional

coverage to the CECON DIVISION business, clients, consultants and marketing programs.

B. Detailed Responsibilities

1. Actively manage client leads as assigned by the CECON Group Manager of The CECON DIVISION of

Becht Engineering or On-Boarding Coordinator. Activities include, but are not limited to, discussion with

clients about the scope and nature of their projects, negotiating and finalizing client contracts, and

managing client or consultant issues.

2. Provide sales forecasts, and manage job leads and projects utilizing the job management system, and

manage client relationships.

3. Develop a market and technical focus for CECON DIVISION in specified markets and applications as

agreed upon between the Client & Market Manager and the CECON Group Manager of the CECON

DIVISION of Becht Engineering, utilizing current consultants in the CECON DIVISION network and

supplementing consultants as defined by management. Drive CECON DIVISION’s branding in these

markets, attend market sector conferences, and solicit new business via phone, email programs and

personal visits (as approved by the CECON Group Manager of the CECON Division of Becht Engineering).

4. Basic professional office coverage to include, but not limited to, office and phone coverage, recruiting and

registering new consultants, providing support for CECON DIVISION administrative tasks such as reviewing

consultant resumes, and attending CECON DIVISION Staff meetings.

5. Implement and manage active consulting projects staffed by a team of CECON DIVISION consultants on an

as-needed basis

C. Position Requirements

1. A technical college degree and plus 10 years of experience in science, engineering, or a technical business.

Technical and/ or market experience in a defined area.

2. Interpersonal and telephone skills with the ability to handle and close sales leads, elicit client needs, and

talk to different people outside of CECON DIVISION.

3. The ability to discuss technical consulting services, negotiate, execute, and manage contracts, manage

client relationships, and manage technical projects.

4. Skilled using MS Office and a computer to access, use, and update databases and to electronically

communicate with associates, consultants, and clients.

5. Work may be conducted from the CECON DIVISION office or remotely; however, on average for part-time

personnel, a minimum of two days per week should be spent in the office.

6. The ability to read, write, type, use the telephone, stoop to kneel to retrieve items, lift office supplies,

push/pull doors, and climb stairs
D. Compensation and Reporting Relationship

1. Compensation shall consist of a base monthly salary and a commission based on project gross margins.

2. Must work cooperatively with the CECON Staff and the network of consultants.

3. Reports to the CECON Group Manager of the CECON Division of Becht Engineering.

The new Chemical Consultants Network (CCN) website is built upon and hosted by the member management system Wild Apricot (WA; almost 7000 other organization members) and will help us grow CCN and serve members better. We have worked to transfer information from the old website to this new one, and customized features for consultants.

New features include

· Easy, intuitive navigation. Just explore and click.

· Login with secure individual ID/password (temp will be sent by email) to premium member-only area.

· But public view allows potential clients to find the right consultants.

· Once you log in, individual premium members can now edit/modify their own profile pages, including photos, contact updates, external webpages and more information about services

· External searches for consultants via Google or other search engines, using the same URL's you had previously, or your new WA URL. New members henceforth will just have the new WA URL. Google ranks CCN highly for searches for chemical consultants, and this will continue.

· Internal searches for consultant expertise by category and geography

· Areas for posting presentations, including past meetings

· Event announcements, including upcoming CCN meetings. We can more easily collaborate with other chemically related groups, and extend our communication reach

· Blog areas, covering topics of interest to premium members interested in growing a chemically-based knowledge community of microbusinesses. This can include sharing ideas, organizing and now a weekly job board for chemists, biochemists and chemical engineers

· A resources section that provides advice to premium members, such as tips on starting/maintaining a consulting business.

Livestreaming CCN Meeting Presentation - A Pilot Project

I've been asked to see if we can livestream a CCN meeting. By livestream, I mean broadcasting video of the meeting presentation across the internet in real time.

There are a number of ways to do this. The ones that I'm considering are YouTube's new Live feature, livestream.com, ustream.com and webinar. I've watched livestreamed events many times over the past several years and the technology just keeps getting better. Of the sites I've used to watch livestreamed events, I find YouTube's new Live service to be the most friendly. One of the best features is that the link to the livestream event is retained after the event is over. The video of the event becomes available almost immediately so that people who missed the event can watch the stored video and can find it by using the same link that we'll provide for the live event. As far as I can tell, this requires no work on the part of the event organizers. The video doesn't have to be archived or moved to a new location. It's just available for viewing and listed in the YouTube channel.

YouTube has some special services for non-profit groups which I was not aware of until yesterday. The Live service is not available to all YouTube users. But I've read that non-profit YouTube channels are afforded this service pretty quickly, so hopefully after I set up the CCN YouTube channel and connect it to the YouTube non-profit group, we'll be able to use their Live service. If so, I'd like to try this out for our first pilot livestreaming project. If not, I'll have to look further into the other solutions.

Anyway, with some luck, we'll be able to set this up and test out livesteaming the January meeting presentation next week. Today I'll be researching and testing connecting my DSLR camera to the laptop to see if we can use that camera for the event, which would be superior to the webcam built into my laptop, which is my fall back position. I should also note that some of these livestream products also allow you to livestream using a cell phone and 4G network. I'm not sure if that's the best solution for us and I don't have a 4G phone, but just wanted to mention that.

The new CCN web site is live!

Greetings, CCN members and site visitors. This is Joanne Leonard, your new web administrator.

I'm sure you've noticed that the CCN web site looks a lot different now. The new site is being hosted by a company called Wild Apricot, which specializes in software for member-based organization. We've customized it for CCN's needs.

For a few months, we were running the old CCN site and the new site in parallel. Now the chemconsultants.org link delivers you directly to this new site.

CCN members should find their profiles on this new site with the same information as on the old site, now in a structured format. When you log in, you will find a link at the top of the page which will allow you to edit your profile information. This is a self-service site. You don't have to contact a steering committee member or the web administrator to update your information (unless you're having a problem or otherwise need a human intervention). You can do it yourself.

Also now automated are new memberships, renewals, and meeting registrations and for your convenience, you can pay by credit card.

We also hope to create more value added features for members in the not too distant future.

I'll continue to blog posts here to tell you more about the site features and things of interest. Blog posts are meant to be participatory things, and if you are a member and are logged in, you should be able to post comments, so feel free to do that.

This blog is available for members to share information and ideas, and to interact online as a community. CCN officers and steering committee might choose to use the blog to give you information or to solicit feedback. CCN members might choose to share useful information related to their specialty or about the field in general, or they might just want to use this as a place to chat. How the organization chooses to use the blog is entirely up to you.
