Dr. Roman Bielski – Chemventive & Biosynthon

Abstract: 

Arguably, the most spectacular events in 20th century bio and organic chemistry were isolation, structure determination and (usually total) synthesis of natural products. Elegant total syntheses are still fascinating. However, the 21st century started with the introduction of novel, magnificent tools allowing the formation of various (not necessarily natural) constructs exhibiting desired properties and abilities. Click chemistry is perhaps the most exciting of these tools. It makes forming connections between various large and small molecules very easy. The presentation will very briefly discuss the specific click reactions chemistries and will look into applications in medicine, surface chemistry, diagnosis, polymer chemistry, etc.

Biography: 

Dr. Bielski holds a M.Sc. in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry (with O. Achmatowicz). He was a post-doc with Sir Derek Barton and later worked in Academia (Imperial College, Lehigh, Cornell). He co-founded several small companies and presently is a partner in Chemventive and Biosynthon, and Adjunct Professor at Wilkes University. Dr. Bielski co-authored over 50 publications, co-edited three books (Wiley and Springer) and holds 20 patents, with several pending applications. One of his accomplishments was a discovery of novel chiral influence, a set of three orthogonal vectors. The relevant concept answers the origin of homochirality problem and why ribose is a sugar component of nucleic acids. Recently, he won the 1st prize in the Evonik challenge for novel syntheses of Benzocaine.
