Chemical Consultants Network ZOOM MEETING
MANAGING MERCURY IN THE PETROLEUM VALUE CHAIN
Dennis O’Rear PhD, BioLPG, LLC
DATE & TIME: April 9, 2025 6:30 PM
Abstract: Mercury is a well-known human and environmental toxin. About 10% of crude oil contains 50 ppb+ and is both sold at a discount and requires special refining equipment. This talk will describe the forms of mercury at different points along the Value Chain and the chemistry by which it transforms. Since this is a complex and large subject, highlights of each area will be discussed. This knowledge can be used to improve the management of mercury and reduce risks to health and the environment.
Biography: Dennis O’Rear earned a BS in ChE from Penn State University in 1972. After two years working at Mobil Research and Development in Paulsboro he earned a PhD from Stanford University in 1980 working for Professor Michel Boudart. The focus of his research was catalysis, which he continued for most of his career at Chevron. He was the leader of a Catalyst Group at Chevron and is an inventor on over 130 granted US patents. He worked in Chevron’s Intellectual Property Group, and with the SasolChevron GJV in GTL. He also developed ways to improve management of mercury. He retired from Chevron in 2015 and continues to consult in both catalysis and mercury management. He has been consulting with BioLPG, LLC on new processes to make renewable propane since 2023.
