THE CHEMISTRY AND ANALYSIS OF THE LARGE POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS

John C. Fetzer, PhD. (Fetzpahs Consulting)

DATE & TIME: Wednesday March 13, 2024, 6:30 PM

Abstract:  The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of chemicals defined by a structure of fused aromatic carbon rings. The “large” ones are generally defined as those of more than 6 fused rings, a definite arising from the scarcity of commercially-available samples of the pure compounds of that size. They are important in environmental and pollution studies, as building blocks in material science for their optical and electrical conductance properties, in astrophysics, and in petroleum and coal processing.

The talk will cover aspects of their basic properties, isomeric differences, spectral and chromatographic behavior, and occurrences. These were made possible by a program of synthesis or isolation of pure samples. Over 50 new large PAHs were made. The original aim for this field of research, was a long-standing and very harmful problem in the hydrocracking process, will also be presented.

Biography:  Dr. John Fetzer, an inventor and expert in Analytical Chemistry, worked for Chevron for over 20-years, has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and over 50 on career management, more than a dozen book chapters or review articles, and 2 books.
