Dr. James Samanen

Abstract
Our speaker, Dr. James Samanen, will review the principles of project management for the consultant. He will discuss the following topics

• What happens once a meaningful contact has been made with a potential client
• How the work is defined
• How it is conducted
• How the success of the project is defined
• How the consultant can identify things learned from a project and carry them forward into future projects.

Biography
Dr. James Samanen is a pharmaceutical consultant with a track record of 30+ years leadership and innovation in drug discovery project & portfolio management, and portfolio data analysis at GlaxoSmithKline. While at GSK James developed and implemented worldwide Portfolio Management for GlaxoSmithKline Discovery and Genetics Research businesses encompassing 2000 staff and $400M budget - involving negotiation and implementation of processes for selection and prioritization of research programs, developing IT systems, mirroring past to present performance with fit-for-purpose benchmarking analysis, modeling future performance, change management and team training. His work enabled an increase in productivity of drug-like leads in GSK by > 50% in 2 years by cross-functional team-working, prioritization and 40% portfoliodownsizing. He also enabled strategy changes reducing cycle times by 50%. As a group leader in Medicinal Chemistry he discovered & championed lotrafiban (antithrombotic) to Phase III, and 2 preclinical candidate antithrombotics. He has been a project leader in diverse areas of drug discovery. He established James Samanen Consulting in December, 2008.

The Cynwyd Club, 332 Trevor Lane, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. From I-76, drive S on City Line Ave. (US Rte. 1). Turn right on Conshohocken State Rd. (Rte. 23); stay in right lane. After the second light watch for white left-turn arrows painted on street (about 0.14 mile). Do not follow Rte. 23 left at turn but instead go straight ahead onto Llandrillo Rd. (passing to the right of Valley Press printing). After one block bear left onto Trevor Lane at stop sign. Clubhouse and parking are on the left.
