Bookkeeping For Consultants
Panel Discussion
Abstract:
All independent consultants need to keep track of billable hours, billable and/or tax deductible expenses, accounts receivable, and prepare invoices. A recent discussion on the CCN LinkedIn site evoked many responses and several ways of doing this, ranging from handwritten notes to sophisticated software and hired bookkeepers. The panel will present their approaches, including QuickBooks, spreadsheets and handwritten records. This will be an interactive session with (hopefully) lots of ideas from the audience as well.
Panelists:
Dr. William (Bill) Golton (Moderator) has been a consultant and a (ret.) executive at The CECON Group for many years. Prior to becoming a consultant he worked for DuPont as an analytical chemist and manager, quality manager, and project manager. He is a founder of the CCN and is a published expert on chemical consulting. Bill does his record keeping by hand and his invoices with a template.
Dr. Ron Bihovsky is a medicinal chemistry and organic chemistry consultant and the founder of Key Synthesis LLC, a custom synthesis company specializing in synthesis of biologically active compounds. He also performs experimental work and testifies as an expert witness in pharmaceutical patent cases. He previously worked as a medicinal chemist in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, and conducted research natural product synthesis in academia. He currently serves as chairman of the Chemical Consultants Network. Ron uses QuickBooks for all of his record keeping and invoices.
Dr. John Newport provides consulting and R&D services through Cheminnolab and Chemventive in which he is a partner. Previous to this he was a Senior Research Fellow at Hercules Incorporated where, in his 34-year career there, he worked on the R&D side of the fibers, film, RIM, resins and paper businesses. His areas of expertise cover polymer chemistry, surface chemistry, rheology and transport phenomena. John does his bookkeeping with spreadsheets and his invoices with a template.
