Abstract: 

The presenter shares his experience transitioning from a career in the chemical industry to consulting. Consulting can be interesting and useful, but online resources and well-meaning colleagues were inadequate preparation to set up the business itself. Before leaving the security of a regular paycheck, a future consultant should understand the details required to go solo.

Biography: 

Tyler Housel is a seasoned chemical industry professional and a 29-year member of the American Chemical Society with a career spanning more than four decades. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.S. in Materials Science from the California Institute of Technology. Tyler’s professional journey has progressed from bench chemist and laboratory manager to global sales manager, business director, and ultimately executive vice president. In 2024, he founded Hnuco Technologies, LLC, where he now serves as Owner and Technologist, specializing in contract research in microwave-assisted esterification, optimization of esterification equipment, and commercial development strategies. He is also a Contributing Editor for Tribology and Lubrication Technology (TLT). Tyler remains deeply engaged in professional and civic leadership, currently serving as Immediate Past Chair of the STLE Philadelphia Section and as a member of the Upper Gwynedd Township Planning Commission and Industrial Development Authority, alongside prior leadership roles in NLGI, ILMA, and STLE.
