Abstract: Generative AI is rapidly transforming how we approach discovery, design, and decision-making in chemistry. From literature review and molecular synthesis to experiment planning and regulatory assessments, these tools create new opportunities for consultants and clients to work more efficiently and strategically. Yet, the complexity of chemistry, and the need for reliable, domain-aware solutions, makes it crucial to separate hype from practical value. In this talk, I will provide an overview of how generative AI is being applied in chemical R&D, highlighting both current capabilities and emerging trends.

Biography: Fan Li, Ph.D., is the founder of Apex 974 LLC, a consultancy specializing in AI and digital solutions for chemical R&D. He has over 15 years of experience in bridging research and technology, including serving as the first Data Scientist in DuPont’s Central R&D organization. Trained as a chemist (Ph.D., University of Minnesota) and computer scientist (M.S., University of Delaware), Fan connects chemistry and materials science with AI, data engineering, and knowledge management. Passionate about empowering R&D teams, he has designed and implemented enterprise-grade AI and digital solutions that support thousands of researchers worldwide.

Part 2 - Engineering Ethics: A Foundation of Professional Practice

Speaker: Dr. Zenaida Otero Gephardt, PhD., P.E.

Professor Emeritus (Chemical Engineering) - Rowan University

    Date and Time: Wednesday, May 21 2025, 5:15pm – 6:45pm (Eastern Time)

    Location: Ashford Boardroom KBR Inc.

242 Chapman Road Newark DE, 19702 (Maps & Direction)

    Registration (Online and In-person)

    Abstract:

Engineering ethics is not merely a set of rules. It forms the foundation of sound decision-making across all areas of engineering practice, from technical design to organizational leadership. Ethical considerations are inherent in every decision, whether it involves complex calculations, project implementation, or personnel management. In an era where both accurate information and misinformation circulate at unprecedented speeds, engineers encounter evolving ethical challenges that reach beyond the boundaries of their workplaces and into the broader society.

All engineering disciplines adhere to established codes of ethics, commonly based on the model developed by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations. However, no code can fully encompass the wide range of ethical and moral complexities professionals may face. Individual values, experiences, and perceptions play a critical role in how engineers interpret data, assess situations, and make judgments.

Recognizing and understanding these underlying influences is essential to responsible and effective engineering practice. This session will examine the development of individual perceptions, present structured approaches to ethical analysis, and engage participants through interactive examples to enhance ethical decision-making skills.
